Cytauxzoonosis is a fatal disease transmitted via ticks that have fed on diseased bobcats. Symptoms include loss of appetite, high fever and malaise, and do not manifest until approximately 20 days after the bite occurs. By this time, there is little that can be done to successfully stop the progression of this deadly disease.
Outdoor cats living in rural or near suburban wooded areas are at the highest risk for contracting this disease. As there is no vaccine available presently, all owners must take precautions immediately.
We recommend using Frontline Plus as an effective flea and tick control, and keeping your cats inside at this time. Hopefully, an effective vaccine will be developed soon, and we will once again have the option of letting our cats outside.
